Clarion Hotel
Crow GirlThe Clarion Hotel appears as a waypoint on a walk across Södermalm, not as a destination or a setting for an event inside the building. Its narrative significance comes from the route that passes it: a semicircular detour that resembles the Sleepwalker’s path, while Jeanette Kihlberg and Sofia Zetterlund draw closer and discuss the case.
Setting and Route
The walk crosses to the other side of Södermalm by way of Swedenborgsgatan and Södra station, descends to Ringvägen, passes the Clarion Hotel, then turns north along Renstiernas gata toward the hills of Vita bergen. The hotel is one marker in this carefully traced circuit. The account gives no description of its interior or of anyone entering it.
The Walk and Its Associations
The route’s resemblance to the Sleepwalker’s path lends the walk an unsettling echo: an ordinary city crossing follows the shape of a route already associated with the investigation. In the same passage, Sofia’s memories are becoming clearer; some other recollections prove false and are mixed with her time working for UNICEF in Sierra Leone. She smiles at Jeanette and welcomes her. The hotel belongs to this unfolding scene as a geographical point along their walk.
Narrative Significance
As Jeanette walks beside Sofia, she whispers in her ear, puts an arm around her waist, and kisses her neck. Their intimacy shares the scene with work news: the boy found at Thorildsplan has been identified as Itkul Zumbayev, one of two brothers missing for some time. The Clarion Hotel thus sits within a passage where private closeness and the investigation’s forward movement overlap, while the looping route links the present walk to the Sleepwalker’s earlier path.
